Sinossi

American audiences have grown familiar with international comix through an influx of European bande dessinee and Japanese manga that has been translated into English over the past two decades. But there are vivacious creative scenes happening worldwide, notably in Brazil, the largest country in South America and fifth-largest country in the world. Braba aims to rectify this cultural blind spot with a single-volume showcase of innovative Brazilian comics, curated by acclaimed artist Rafael Grampá and comics editor Janaina de Luna. Produced by Fantagraphics in collaboration with Brazilian publisher MINO, this extraordinary collection of 13 short stories created by 16 pioneering Brazilian cartoonists encapsulates a thriving and thrilling comics scene.Braba unites a diverse array of voices and styles under a unifying theme: deeply personal stories from experimental cartoonists. Each artist has uniquely interpreted this concept, creating all-new work for English readers, resulting in a collection that encapsulates the intensity, political gravitas, and avant-garde spirit of the Brazilian comics community during one of the country’s most challenging socio-political periods. The contributors to Braba include Amanda Miranda, Bruno Seelig, Diego Sanchez, Gabriel Goes, Jefferson Costa, Jéssica Groke, Sirlene Barbosa, João Pinheiro, Cris Eiko, Paulo Crumbim, Pedro Cobiaco, Pedro Franz, Rafael Coutinho, Shiko, and Wagner Willian. The term “braba,” a Brazilian slang derived from “brava” meaning angry, has been embraced as a symbol of something impressive and groundbreaking. Originating from Brazil’s edgy youth culture, the term is a compliment for individuals who exhibit unique and daring attitudes — an attitude exemplified by the bold and vibrant comics in this anthology.

AT WITH AND ABOUT TP THROUGH THE BLIGHTED LENS OF GLENN BRAY

For over 50 years, Glenn Bray has been shining a spotlight on some of the most outrageous, powerful, and subversive art made in the 20th century. He was the first to note and preserve what amounts to an alternative history of American pop culture. In his new memoir, At, With and About, he turns his focus on the potent post-war landscape of the San Fernando Valley?s washed-up entertainers, suburbs, and Hollywood debris that lit the fuse for a life of endless aesthetic engagement. Bray met and befriended some of the most wild and woolly icons of outr? culture as well as fellow travelers, collectors, and dealers that make up the world of So Cal pop history. With all-new artist interviews and Bray?s own large-format photographs, this book bears graphic witness to it all with hundreds of images tracing his life of collecting art and befriending artists.

ATLAS COMICS LIBRARY HC NO 10 SPORTS ACTION

In the summer of 1949, Marvel decided to bring its successful sports pulps to the Atlas comic-book line, launching Sport Stars #1, which became Sports Action with its second issue, the same name as one of his most successful sports pulps of the 1930s. Across fourteen tumultuous issues, the artistic cream of the Timely/Atlas crop (Syd Shores, Joe Maneely, Bill Everett, Bob Powell, Gene Colan, George Tuska, Bernard Krigstein, and others) told biographical stories about sports heroes of the 1930s and 1940s in all the major sports: Knute Rockne (football), Hack Wilson (baseball), Man O?War (horse racing), Herman Sandow (physical culture), Bronco Nagurski (football), Ralph Kiner (baseball), Phil Rizzuto (baseball), Warren Spahn (baseball), Sugar Ray Robinson (boxing), Jackie Robinson (baseball), and Niles Kinnick, the 1939 Heisman Trophy winner of the Iowa Hawkeyes, among a score of others! These never before collected stories add to the historical Timely/Atlas tapestry, providing another window into the variety and breadth of Marvel?s early history.
